How the Solar Export Rate Works

Any electricity produced by your solar array that is not consumed by you that month is sent back to the grid and credited to you on the same monthly basis.  This excess electricity used to fall under TEP’s Net Metering plan in which you would receive a 1 for 1 return on electricity sent to the grid.

Net Metering is no longer in effect and TEP has since operated under a Net Export plan.  TEP will currently credit you .0781 cents for every kwh sent to the grid.  The credit shows up on your bill every month.  This credit is used for future consumption to offset your charges like a version of a cellular plan that offered rollover minutes.  Any credits that go unused and with a value of more than $10 will be sent to you during TEP’s True Up month in October.  https://www.tep.com/rcp/

TEP’s current solar Net Export rate is good through September 30th, 2021, at which point under current ruling is expected to drop at no more than 10%.

TRICO utility operates under a Net Export rate plan too.  Trico has a Net Export Rate of .04547 cents for every kwh.  This plan remains in effect until the end of the first quarter, 2021.  If you live in Trico’s service area, it is important to understand your goal in going solar is to reduce your consumption from the grid.  https://www.trico.coop/member-services/understanding-your-rates/

Rules approved by the Arizona Corporate Commission (ACC) can impact the current solar export rate but not for those who have already gone solar.  Once you make the switch you are grandfathered in to the current export rate plan for 10 years.
